Trump campaign says US intelligence warned of Iran assassination threats

The campaign for former President Donald Trump has recently disclosed that US intelligence officials have informed him of "real and specific threats" originating from Iran, aimed at assassinating him. This revelation marks a significant moment, underscoring the persistent tensions between the United States and Iran, especially in the context of Trump's foreign policy legacy and the intricate security concerns faced by former American leaders. Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, has been a polarizing figure both during his time in office and in the years following his presidency. His administration took a notably hard stance against Iran, highlighted by the withdrawal of the United States from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018—a move that was met with widespread criticism from the international community, but praised by his supporters for its tough approach towards what he perceived as a looming threat from Tehran. One of the most consequential actions of Trump's presidency was the January 2020 drone strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a move that significantly escalated tensions between the two nations. Iran vowed to retaliate for Soleimani’s death, which they dubbed an act of international terrorism. Since then, concerns over potential reprisals have persisted, with US intelligence agencies staying vigilant regarding threats against US interests and former officials involved in the decision-making process of the strike.
