Leader of Los Zetas sent to Mexico after serving US sentence

Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, the notorious founder of the brutally feared hitmen group known as Los Zetas, has been sent back to Mexico after serving his sentence in the United States. Los Zetas, originally established as a faction of elite former military personnel, evolved into one of the most formidable and violent drug trafficking organizations in Mexico under the leadership of Cárdenas Guillén. The journey of Cárdenas Guillén through the criminal underworld began in the late 1990s when he rose to power within the Gulf Cartel, before establishing Los Zetas as the cartel's armed wing. His leadership period marked a significant shift in the landscape of organized crime in Mexico, with Los Zetas gaining a reputation for their ruthless tactics and expansive control over various illegal enterprises, including drug trafficking, kidnapping, and extortion. Cárdenas Guillén's reign of terror eventually caught the attention of international law enforcement agencies, leading to his capture in 2003. His extradition to the United States in 2007 marked a significant victory for anti-drug operations, with Cárdenas Guillén later pleading guilty to several charges, including drug trafficking, money laundering, and threatening U.S. federal agents.
