Harvey Weinstein indecent assault charges dropped by CPS

Indecent assault charges against disgraced Hollywood movie producer Harvey Weinstein have been dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the UK. The decision comes after the CPS reviewed new evidence related to the case. Harvey Weinstein was one of the most powerful figures in the film industry before his downfall in 2017, when multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, harassment, and assault. The #MeToo movement gained momentum as more and more women came forward with similar allegations against high-profile individuals. The charges against Weinstein in the UK were in relation to three separate incidents alleged to have taken place between 2010 and 2013. The decision to drop the charges was made after the CPS received new information from one of the complainants, which cast doubt on the credibility of the evidence. In a statement, the CPS said, "In order to bring a charge of indecent assault, prosecutors must be satisfied that there is sufficient evidence...to provide a realistic prospect of conviction. After all the evidence was carefully reviewed, it was decided there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction." This decision does not absolve Weinstein of the allegations against him, as he still faces other charges in the United States. In 2020, Weinstein was convicted of rape and sexual assault in New York and was sentenced to 23 years in prison.
